Obedience Demo
Watch AKC Obedience Champions work through their paces as their trainers and handlers offer training tips and strategies for starting your dog in obedience training. You’ll see German Shepards, a Welsh Corgi, a Boxer and Springer Spaniels handled by Shirley Harder, DVM; Anna Childs, professional dog trainer and owner of AdelHorst Kennels in Altoona and Debbie Jensen, champion dog handler.
Canine Good Citizen Practice and Testing
Renee Jetter, owner of Canine Craze Performance Center, will explain the components of the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test and Award. And the good news is that your dog does not need to be registered or even purebred to participate!
Started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.
Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. As you work with your dog to teach the CGC skills, you’ll discover the many benefits and joys of training your dog. Training will enhance the bond between you and your dog. Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with-they respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and they fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high quality life.
Make sure your dog is brushed out and nails are clipped as per one of the test items being “Appearance and Grooming”.

Meet the Breed:
Belgian Malinois & Portuguese Water Dog
It looked like a German Shepard, but it was a Belgian Malinois in military service that was part of the team that raided the Bin Laden compound. The dog you’ll meet today has the most incredible riches to rags to riches story.
Ted Kennedy and the Obama family have made the Portuguese Water Dog a more recognizable breed. You don’t see too many in Des Moines but this particular dog is a Westminster Kennel Club dog show competitor, finishing third this year.
Llama-Rama presented by Auld's Lluminous Llamas
You can get up close and personal with Llamas at the Great Iowa Pet Expo Llama-Rama.
Most people don't realize that the versatile Llama can be a pet, a companion, a competitor, a guardian, a fiber producer and a means of transportation. They are easy to care for, come in all price ranges and don't need a lot of land to be happy. They love people and they are the most interesting conversation topic: "You have a Llama!? Really?"
At the Great Iowa Pet Expo, the Auld family from Van Horne, IA will introduce you to some friendly llamas, answer all your questions, and even show you some Iowa Champions. This is a hands-on display with Llamas you can pet, fiber you can feel and you can even take a ride in a Llama Cart.
You'll find that these gentle, intelligent and independent animals are perfect pets for young children, wonderful 4H projects and ideal companions for all acreage critters from dogs and cats to sheep and cows, even goats and horses.

Even the crowd gets in the act with this Contest as we search for out 2009 Leave It Champion!
